Dr Tilahun Mehari, head of BoFEC, emphasized in his opening remarks that the successes of the first phase are a major reason for the continuity and expansion of the Programme into its nascent second phase. He continued that the commitment of woreda leadership, community and implementing partners is fundamental in this respect. Dr Anu Eskonheimo from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland reiterated Finland’s renewed commitment to support the AgroBIG programme. A string of presentations by members of AgroBIG PSU followed, outlining the major strategies and structure of the Programme’s second phase.

Representatives from Fogera and Mecha woredas shared their experiences of the first phase of AgroBIG. The testimonies confirmed that the programme has contributed a lot to improve the quality of produce, agronomic practices, and marketing, supporting the capacity building of cooperatives and above all creating job opportunities to rural unemployed youth and women. Mr Asfaw Demos, Trade, Industry and Market Development sector head from Fogera, highlighted how AgroBIG had assisted in curbing the influence of illegal brokers in rural communities, thus assisting farmers to get justice when selling their crop. Participants also reflected their expectations to be considered in this next phase of AgroBIG.

Participants concurred that AgroBIG phase II is most welcome and expressed their commitment to make the programme successful.
